The Pilates method has been practiced in the US since the 1920's. The method's creator, Joseph Pilates, was born in Germany as a small, sickly child. Determined to find health and strength, he studied anatomy books. He would even lie in the woods to study how the animals moved. He studied both Eastern and Western forms of exercise, including boxing, yoga, and ancient Greek and Roman regimens.
As a German citizen in England during WWI, he was interned in a prison camp where he began to devise his system of exercises that he later called "Contrology," which is the basis for the Pilates method that we practice today. He took the springs from the beds to devise exercise equipment for the bedridden, which evolved into the equipment that we use that today.
He said, " Logically, man should develop his physical condition simultaneously with development of his mind."

What makes Pilates different from other exercise regimes?
Pilates works to strengthen to core musculature (abdominals, inner thighs, buttocks, and low back), which supports the
spine improving posture and overall well-being.
Unlike weight-training, which tears the muscles to increase bulk, Pilates works to gently lengthen and strengthen the
muscles creating a longer leaner physique.
How long will it take for me to see a difference in my body?
As Joseph Pilates said, "After 5 session , you will feel different. After 10 sessions, you will see changes in
your body. After 30 sessions, you will have a new body."
All bodies change at different rates, but with consistent work (at least twice a week) you will achieve these results.
Will Pilates help me lose weight?
Pilates changes the body by adding strength without bulky muscles.
Pilates is not designed to be a weight-loss program, however, clients feel that their whole physique changes, often
changing clothing sizes.
You will feel better and look better!
How do I start Pilates?
We recommend that everyone start with 5 private sessions on the apparatus. See Classes and Rates for more
details. The one-on-one attention allows the client and instructor to better assess any special needs.
Once the client feels comfortable within his/her own body with the exercises (usually 3-10 sessions), the client may
choose to experience semi-private sessions (see picture below), which are 3-4 people on the apparatus.
Why choose the "classical" approach to Pilates?
Joseph Pilates' original system should be honored because it works.
Joseph Pilates spent years perfecting his method so it should take years of careful study to learn his system
properly, and all of our teachers have studied at the "source" in New York City with the most esteemed Master
Teachers, Bob Liekens, who is most instrumental in keeping teacher training to its truest form and Susan
Moran-Perich.
It is easy to "say" you teach the classical method; however, it takes years of study for a teacher to truly appreciate
the genius of the method at it purest. Often when teachers try to tinker with the exercises is because they have not
taken the time to learn the method properly.

Pilates relieves Lower Back pain
Most chronic lower back issues are a result of weak abdominal muscles. The classical Pilates method works these core abdominal muscles to support a strong taller spine. Space is created between the vertebrae to fully accommodate the discs allowing for ample nerve function.
